After spending most of the summer cruising around the Balearics I finally got the chance to try out my new Alvey deck reel on passage from Menorca to Sardinia. As you can see it had a very productive first outing and I was very impressed on how it performed. I was lucky enough to catch a superb Blue Fin Tuna just from trolling a surface lure 30m behind the boat as we sailed along at 7 knots. As we were a good 100 miles offshore in a fair blow, there was a large swell running and I think it would have been very difficult to land the fish using a conventional rod as I needed one hand free just to hang on to the boat. Anyway the fish was delicious and we have even tried one of the smoking bags you sent which made a very pleasant change. Even after giving half the fish away to another cruising yacht it has still keep us well fed for the best part of the week, and now we have the remainder smoked it will last a great deal more.

This reel incorporates the Easy Cast System and is a slightly different version of the 500BC using a graduated lever drag to control your clutch settings when fighting a good fish. The Alvey 475CP is a 4¾ inch diameter reel which is a "classic" size for Centrepins. Using modern materials - cold-forged aluminium, sealed stainless bearings and modern manufacturing techniques, Alvey has produced this reel that is salt resistant and casts like a bullet (using the Wallis method). It has no external "bits" to catch the line and the manufacturing tolerances are so fine that there is no way that line can slip behind the spool. An excellent trotting reel as well.

The Alvey 475CP really is "Superior".

Our traditional stainless steel back has the metal side cast system on the 475A5 reel. This model runs extremely freely on dual stainless steel ball bearings. A fish alert supplies a small amount of back pressure if required to slow the ultra free running spool. Spool is easily removed with the spindle nut on the front of the reel. The pressure from a slow current movement on a float should be enough to take line off a float fishing reel and our ball bearing reels allow this to happen. A broad rounded lip on the spool of the 475 reels allows fingertip control to release or recover line and move your float. The handles are usually only used when fighting and landing your fish.
